Green Initiative

The Kitchen

  • Keep a bottle of water in the refrigerator so you don't have to run the tap to get cold water.
  • Install low-flow aerators at faucets to reduce water use by up to 50%.
  • Run the dishwasher only when the load is full. When washing dishes by hand, fill one tub with soapy water and the other with rinse water.
  • Avoid running water while rinsing fruits and vegetables. To rinse, partially fill a bowl with water and then use the water to water your plants or garden.
  • Wait until the dishwasher is fully loaded before turning it on to save water and energy.

Facts

  • When we let the tap run for one minute, we use almost 4 liters of water.
  • A leaky faucet of one drop of water per second can waste 10,220 liters per year.

Bathroom

  • Install faucet aerators and low-flow showerheads to reduce water use in your bathroom by up to 50%.
  • Take quick showers or turn off the water while soaping up.
  • When buying a new toilet, consider low-flow models. These new models use only 3.8 liters of water per flush, while older toilets use up to 19 liters of water. You can also install a tank bank to save water from your existing tank.
  • Check regularly for water leaks (faucets, toilets and pipes) and repair them as soon as possible.

Facts

  • In the bathroom, we use about 65% of the water in the house.
  • A leaky toilet can waste up to 757 liters of water per day.
  • If you leave the water running while brushing your teeth, you waste about 9 liters of water.

Laundry room

  • When purchasing a new washer, consider a high-efficiency, front-loading model.
  • Energy Star certified machines are at least 37% more efficient than conventional models.
  • Do your washes only when the machine is at full capacity.

Outside

  • Water plants and grass either in the morning or evening to reduce evaporation.
  • Cut your grass shorter, at about 7.5 cm (3 in.), to create shade for the roots and keep moisture in the soil.
  • To water your plants and garden, collect rainwater in a barrel.
  • Wash vehicles with a bucket and sponge and a high-pressure spray gun instead of using a conventional garden hose. This can save up to 100 liters of water per wash.
  • Use compost or mulch in your garden and flower beds to retain moisture in the soil and reduce weeds.
